What makes an antiperspirant effective
An effective antiperspirant reduces underarm wetness and odor by temporarily blocking sweat ducts with aluminum-based salts that form a gel plug in the gland ducts. This physical barrier limits moisture where odor-causing bacteria thrive. Effectiveness depends on active ingredient concentration, formulation type, skin conditions, and how consistently and correctly you apply it. Clinical trials typically measure sweat reduction under standardized conditions; individual results vary with perspiration level, hair removal, and shaving irritation. For many people, over-the-counter aluminum chloride or aluminum zirconium products provide sufficient daily protection when used as directed.
How antiperspirants work
Active ingredients and mechanism
Antiperspirants rely on aluminum salts such as aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate, and aluminum zirconium. When these dissolve, they interact with sweat electrolyte to create a soluble gel that physically occludes part of the duct, reducing flow to the skin surface. This reduction in moisture directly cuts down the substrate bacteria need to produce body odor. The effect is temporary and generally lasts through one or two daily applications; efficacy increases when the product stays dry before reapplication. Unlike antiperspirants, deodorants primarily target bacterial load and fragrance rather than sweat volume.
Formulations and delivery

- Gel and cream: higher viscosity; can build up on skin or fabrics if not fully dried.
- Aerosol spray: fast drying, even coverage; may include alcohol for quick evaporation and propellants that some prefer to avoid.
