Eligibility basics
TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program that speeds up airport screening for domestic and select international trips. There is no minimum or maximum age to apply. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident and complete the enrollment process in person. Children can be included in a parent or guardian's Known Traveler Number (KTN) or receive their own pass, depending on the enrollment method. This guide explains how age, documentation, and membership types affect your ability to use PreCheck.
Age and membership types
Adults 18 and older
Adults can apply for TSA PreCheck through several programs, including TSA Pre✓ (via application), Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI. Each program has its own citizenship and residency requirements, background checks, and, for some, interview steps. Approval grants a Known Traveler Number (KTN) you enter at check-in and when boarding. Your KTN links to your boarding pass so you can use expedited screening lanes.
Minors and families
Minors under 18 are not required to have their own PreCheck membership to receive expedited screening. If a parent or guardian has PreCheck, the child can travel under the same KTN and benefit from the same lanes when flying with that adult. Alternatively, a minor can be added to an adult’s membership or obtain a separate membership if eligible. When traveling, minors should carry a government-issued photo ID or a copy of their birth certificate, and must be accompanied by an adult who is also approved for PreCheck when using the same lane.
How to apply and what to bring
You must apply in person at an Enrollment Center (TSA locations in airports or secure facilities). For adults, typical documents include a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a boarding pass, and a form of payment if applicable. For minors, bring proof of identity and citizenship (such as a birth certificate or passport), a photo ID, and a parent or guardian’s KTN or documentation if applying together. Processing times vary; some centers issue the KTN on the same day, while others may take a few days. Once approved, your KTN can be added to airline profiles to unlock PreCheck at no extra cost on eligible flights.
Common limitations and clarifications
- No minimum age: children of any age can be associated with a PreCheck-enabled adult traveler.
- No maximum age: older travelers can continue to use PreCheck as long as they remain eligible under program rules.
- Physical presence required: in-person enrollment is necessary to submit biometrics and documentation.
- Lane access depends on airline and airport: PreCheck is not available on all carriers or routes; verify participation before travel.

Program integrity and rules
TSA PreCheck relies on verified information and in-person enrollment to maintain security. Keep your KTN confidential and use it only for your own travel. If your circumstances change—such as name, citizenship, or address—update your membership promptly through the official program channels. Misuse or sharing KTN details can result in loss of privileges. When in doubt, contact TSA customer service or check the official program website for the most current policies and lane availability at your departure airport.
